Bill Berra
Vice President, News

Bill Berra

Bill Berra is the Vice President of News for the Journal Broadcast Group television stations.  Berra has worked for the Milwaukee-based company at both ends of his 35-year career in the broadcast business.

“Having virtually grown up in newsrooms around the country, it is especially gratifying to be able to work with the professionals we have running our company’s stations,” said Berra.  “And coming full circle back to the Journal Broadcast Group has been an incredibly satisfying step in my career path,” he added.

The eight-time Emmy winner started his local news career reporting for Newsradio620 WTMJ in Milwaukee.  From there, he became the first night side television reporter to use live microwave equipment while reporting news to Milwaukee viewers.

Berra has worked for many of the largest companies in the broadcast news business but he credits his start in the industry to his mother, who sold advertising time at WINI radio in his hometown of Murphysboro, Illinois.  At 15-years-of-age, Berra spun records and shut down the transmitter at night on WINI, the local daytime-only radio station.  Reading wire copy and local news came later and another budding broadcast career was launched.

Over the course of his career, Berra has worked nearly every job in the local television news business.  From the assignment desk to street reporter to executive producer, one phrase has served him well as he’s guided news coverage at stations across the country: “There’s no news in the newsroom.”
